Invitation : Issued from GASP and signed off by Jonathan Parsons and Arturo Casciaro. There was
no mention of an exhibition or preview, only a Salon to investigate "display". A sense that the
invitation was exclusive and not for the general public. The attendees were advised that they might
be recorded or photographed. Finally the invitation had the Artspace, GASP and arc logos.
Entrance: The attendees were greeted individually by either having their photos taken or
interviewed on camera briefly.
Lobby leading to the Salon: At the top of the stairs leading to the Lobby, the attendees could see a
DVD of the previous Salon. A number of pieces of work were displayed on the main Lobby wall. On
the smaller wall an appropriated Poster was displayed advertising the Salon: Poster 1:On the door
to the Salon a second appropriated Poster was displayed advertising the Salon: Poster 2
Inside the Salon, Knee Play 1: The average attendance for the 4 Salons was 14. This was just over
the target we were aiming for of 12. The fare consisted of wine and bread, with a token amount of
orange juice. This was a nod to the church service. The attendees were left to mingle and look at
the pieces of work for about 30 minutes. This was intended as an easing in period. Also it provided
an unscientific assessment of the level of engagement viewers have when the viewing is
contextualised as a social gathering. At the half hour, the artist started to talk about the plan (or
absence of plan) for the Salon. This was done at normal voice level and to no one in particular,
however it stopped the chattering and drew attention to the artist. The position taken for this varied
across each Salon. This was used to gauge differing reactions including how the group
progressively ended up positioned during the session.
